Heidrich and Wink (1994. Zeitschrift für Naturforschung 49c:230-234) compared 300 bases of the cytochrome b gene for Strix aluco, S. butleri and S. woodfordi. 
They found 9-12% differences between these species and concluded that they are "distinct species".
