Open country, farms, scrubby wastes, open woods, edge, grassy steppes, desert oases, riverine thickets, swamps. Many subspecies have been described, the following are subspecies groups, sometimes treated as species. Many introductions of mainly of colchicus and torquatus, or of mixed stocks. Introductions virtually worldwide. P. c. colchicus Widespread but local in lowlands and mts. to 4000 m of sc Eurasia in nw Turkey (probably introduced), n Caucasus, Transcaucasus, Transcaspia, s Turkestan, n Iran and Afghanistan. Includes chrysomelas, mongolicus, tarimensis and possibly torquatus. - -
P. c. torquatus E,s Asia from the Aral Sea area, e Kazakhstan, n Turkestan, Mongolia, n China, se Siberia and Korea s throughout China, Taiwan, to n Burma and n Vietnam in Tonkin. - -
