Grassland, oak woodland, semi-desert scrub, chaparral, sagebrush.  Lowlands to 1800 m from s British Columbia, Vancouver I., Washington and w Idaho, s through most of Oregon, Calif. incl. Santa Catalina I., and Utah to s Baja Calif. 
Populations n of s Oregon were probably introduced. 
Introduced  in King I. (Australia), New Zealand, Hawaiian Is., Santa Crus and Santa Rosa is. off Calif. 
Unsuccessful Introduced  in Europe.

Colinus virginianus
Brushy fields, grassland, farms, thickets. 
Lowlands to 1500 m from se Wyoming , c S. Dakota, s Minnesota, s Wisconsin, c Michigan, s Ontario, s New York and c New England s to e Colorado, e New Mexico, wc,s,e Texas, Gulf coast and Florida; w to e Coahuila, w San Luis Potosí, e Sonora, se Nayarit, e Jalisco, Guanajuato, México, Puebla and Oaxaca; and Pacific lowlands in Oaxaca and Chiapas; e to Tabasco, e Chiapas and extreme nw Guatemala.  Cuba, incl. Isle of Pines.  Introduced  widely in w N. America, Bahamas, W. Indies, New Zealand and unsuccessfully in Hawaiian Is. and Europe. 
All species of Colinus are closely related and may intergrade or hybridize where ranges are in contact, but many contact zones are poorly known.  Some races of C. virginianus, e.g., ridgwayi, are distinctive and formerly were treated as species.

S Eurasia from se Europe in the Balkans e through Turkey, Near and Middle East s to Sinai Peninsula, nw Arabia, Transcaucasus, s Kazakhstan, Turkestan and Altai to Pakistan (exc. se,e), n India, w Tibet, Mongolia and n China.  Introduced  St. Helena I., Robbens I. off S. Africa, Hawaiian Is., and w N. America.
Very similar to the Rock Partridge (Alectoris graeca)
