Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and Crete), Turkey, Near East (s to Sinai Pen.), Arabia, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan (Baluchistan, Himalayas), n India (Himalayas, 1800-5500 m, from Kashmir e to Arunachal Pradesh and n Assam), China, Korea and Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu); Nearctic from w,n Alaska, Yukon, w,s Mackenzie, nw Manitoba, n Ontario and n Quebec to Labrador, and s to s Alaska (w to Unalaska in Aleutians), n Baja Calif., highlands of n Mexico (Durango, Guanajuato, Nuevo León), w,c Texas, w Oklahoma, w Kansas, New York and New England; probably Appalachian Mts. s to e Tennessee and w N. Carolina.  Winters in N. America from sc Alaska and s Canada s to c Mexico and se U.S.; northernmost populations in Eurasia winter s to n Africa.

Locally in Israel, s Arabia, ne Egypt (Sinai Pen.), and from Niger, e Chad, se Egypt, c,s Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and n Somalia s through e,s Africa in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, se Zaire, Zambia, s Angola, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe to s S. Africa.

Hieraaetus pennatus
Forest, edge, plains, semi-desert. 
Locally in s,ec Palearctic from Morocco to Tunisia and s Europe (Iberian Pen., France, Balearic Is., s Czechoslovakia, Romania, Balkan states, Greece) e through Turkey, cw,s Russia from Moscow area and Ukraine s to Transcaucasus, Transcaspia, Turkestan, n Iran and n Afghanistan to s Siberia (from Altai e to Transbaicalia), Mongolia, w China (w Sinkiang), s Tibet and nw India (Himalayas) probably Manchuria (recorded in summer in Heilungkiang, Kirin and Liaoning). 
A small number breed in s S. Africa in w,s Cape Prov. and Namibia and perhaps in Botswana (unconfirmed). 
Winters in subSaharan Africa (except forested w,c and coastal Namibia) and s Asia e to se Asia.

(Sumbawa, Timor, Wetar, Luang).
