Isert, Paul Erdmann     1756-1789
W Indies +  Africa

  1756: born Brandenburg
Appointed Chief Surgeon to the Danish settlements in West Africa when in his late twenties.
Arrived on the Gold Coast in November, 1783.
He left in October 1786, apparently angered by being refused permission to travel inland
at the invitation of the Asante king, Osei Kwame, one of whose sisters had availed herself
  of his medical skills.
Returned in November 1788, with his bride of seven months.
Paul died on 21 January 1789, and his wife on 25 February.
Their daughter, born on 17 February, survived her mother by only three weeks.
Remembered principally for his book, Reise nach Guinea und den Caribäischen Inseln in Columbia,
published in Copenhagen in 1788. Cast in the form of twelve letters,
  written between 10 November 1783 and 10 July 1787.
The first six dealing with affairs in the area of the Volta estuary, and including
an account of the Danish sponsored attack on the Anlo
  The seventh letter reports Isert's visit to Whydah;
the eighth is concerned principally with the Ga in whose territory the Danes
  had their headquarters, Christiansborg;
  the ninth describes the circumstances of the European transients on the Gold Coast;
and the tenth has an account of Akuapem, which the author visited,
together with brief notes on the Akwamu, Krobo, Fante, Akyem and Asante.
The eleventh and twelfth letters relate Isert's experiences on board the slaver
that took him to the Caribbean, en route for Denmark in late 1786,
and offers observations on the islands of St. Croix, St. Eustacius,
St. Thomas, St. John, Guadeloupe and Martinique.
Reise nach Guinea was first translated into Danish in 1789,
Dutch in 1790 and French in 1793.
An English version has now been produced by Selena Axelrod Winsnes.
Isert wrote in appallingly bad German, despite this being his mother tongue.

[refs Linnaeus. Nature and Nation. Koerner, L. 1999. Harvard Univ. Press.
Linnaeus The Compleate Naturalist. Blunt, W. 2001. Princeton Univ. Press.]

  Paternal Grandparents: farmers
   Ingemar Bengtsson  [1633-1693]
   Ingrid Ingemarsdotter  [1641-1717]
  Parents:
   Christina Brodersonia  [1688-1733]
   Nils Ingemarsson Linnaeus [1674-1748]
Father "named himself Linnaeus to celebrate
a triple trunked Linden tree growing next to the
family farm, Jonsboda Ostragard, in Hvittaryd parish
   Sunnerbo hundred, Vaxsjo bishopric, Smaland."
Blunt refers to the tree as a Lime tree; evidently linden and lime are synonymous.
Born:  Stenbrohult, in Smaland.  23 May, 1707 (Georgian Calendar).
Married: Sara Elisabeth Moraea in 1739.
   Eldest son
Brother Samuel and at least 3 sisters.
   Emerentia Linnaeus  [1723-1753]
   Anna Maria   [1710-1769]
   Sophia Juliana   [1714-1771]
  Child:
   Carl Linnaeus   [    -1783]
dies a bachelor, and without issue.
Carl passed on to his son his academic post, which
the son appeared to have little interest in, largely
   ignoring the position and gardens.
Characterized by his father as having no interest in Botany.
Enobled: 1762 as von Linne "the lord of all of Sweden's Clams"
for his demonstration of a technique for culturing pearls.
Dies: 10 Jan, 1778 in Uppsala.

Linnaeus saw his main contribution as economical, believing
in the idea of employing nature to make Sweden prosperous and
independant. Late in his life there are indications that he saw
the dream of acclimatization of foreign species as flawed.

His student do not appear to have been particularly fond of him
often ridiculing him and being eager to be free from his control.
Linnaeus saw his students as essentially belonging to him, and thier
works, understandings and production as rightfully his own.

Lorenz, Theodore K.   1842-1909 (? 1911)
German zoologist. Active in Russia. (Information from Pierre Cabard)
Some people think the dates for Lorenz are 1842 - 1909, but I found 1842 - 1911 in a mail from Moskow's Goethe Institute. He was of German descent. He explored Kaukasus and (maybe) Kirghizistan. He worked in the Zoological Garden of the Imperial University as taxidermist. He specially studied the Tetraonidae and Phasianidae. And the flight of birds. He described a new Phasianus form, Phasianus mongolicus turcestanicus.
Works:

Motley, James      1814-1859
 & Dillwyn, Lewis Llewelyn

Biographical notes from Mrs. FE Warr (via Richard Morris)
"J.Motley was a civil engineer who went to Labuan in 1849 to work
for the Eastern Archipelago Co. which mined the coal deposits on
the island (one of four campanies that went bankrupt in quick succession).

His work in collaboration with L.L.Dillwyn on the natural history
of Labuan (1855) is the first to contain field notes on the
commoner birds of Borneo; meanwhile in 1854 he was appointed
Superintendent of a private company in the territory of the
Sultan of Banjarmasin, but was killed at Bangkal near there
during the Malay insurrection of 1860 (see Nineteenth Century
Borneo by Prof.Irwin). His bird collections and field notes
survived and were the basis of Sclater's paper (1863). Motley
added another 58 species to the Borneo list.
  (B.E.Smythies, The Birds of Borneo, 4th ed.,1999)

"My friend Mr L.L.Dillwyn having placed in my hands some MS.
notes written by the late Mr James Mottley of Banjermassing (who
was killed in the Malay insurrection at that place in 1860),
together with the series of bird-skins to which the notes refer,
I have .......determined the species, and added some few remarks
 ...."
(P.L.Sclater, Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, 1863)

Motley was a mining engineer who died in 1859.
He was in Labuan in 1852 and in Borneo from 1854 to 1859. (no
  ref.)"

Note that Motley's dates are often given as 1814-1892 (e.g.
 Cat.LibraryBritishMuseum(N.H.)). Those Dillwyn's dates.
