Lagopus lagopus
Tundra, subalpine and subarctic moors.

The following subspecies groups are sometimes treated as separate
species because scoticus doesn't acquire a white winter plumage, but the populations of w Norway are intermediate between lagopus and scoticus.

L. l. lagopus.
From Greenland and Scandinavia e across n,c Russia and n,c Siberia to Ussuriland and Sakhalin, s to ca. lat. 55°N in the west and ca. lat. 49°N in Kirghiz steppes, and ca. lat. 47°N in Mongolia and Manchuria. From Alaska e across Arctic islands (Banks, s Melville, Bathurst, w Baffin) and n,c Canada to Labrador and s to c British Columbia, c Ontario, c Quebec and Newfoundland.

The RED GROUSE of the British Isles, incl. Orkney Is. and Hebrides.

From n Alaska, nw Mackenzie and British Columbia e across the Canadian arctic islands, Mackenzie, Keewatin and n Quebec to s Labrador and Newfoundland.

Locally to ca. 2400 m from the British Isles and Scandinavia e through n Russia and n Siberia to at least the Kolyma R., Lena R. and Ussuriland, s to Ardennes, Alps, Balkans, e to Kirghiz steppes, Turkestan, n Mongolia, w,ne China, and Korea.
Hybridizes with T. urogallus.

Coniferous forest, edge.
Locally in mts., mostly 1500-3000 m in the Caucasus Mts. of Georgia
and adjacent nw Iran, and the Black Sea coastal range in ne Turkey.

Mature coniferous forest.
Mostly 600-1800 m from n Europe e across n Russia and n Siberia to upper Lena R. and s locally to the Pyrenees, Cantabrian Mts., Alps, Balkans, s Urals, w Siberian steppes, nw Mongolia and Transbaicalia. Re-Introduced in Scotland.
