Old World in three areas: S Spain, n Morocco and, formerly, n Algeria. Angola, se,e Zaire, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe to s S. Africa. Lowlands to 1800 m of Madagascar.
Sympatric with atra in Spain and nw Africa.
