| Columba palumbus
Woodland, suburbs, towns. Palearctic from British Isles and c Scandinavia e to c Russia and wc Siberia (w of Ob R. drainage), and s to e Atlantic is. (Azores, Madeira Is.), n Mediterranean region (incl. most is.), nw Africa (from Morocco to Tunisia), Turkey and Transcaucasus, and from Near and Middle East and ne Arabia e to extreme n Pakistan, extreme nw India (Kashmir) and extreme w China (w Sinkiang). often nest near the nest of a Hobby (Falco subbuteo); the Hobby attacks
and drives away all medium to large birds near its nest, including Hooded
Crows which take the eggs and chicks of other birds, including Wood-Pigeons.
Although the Hobby may prey on Wood-Pigeons, the association results in
a net benefit to the pigeons (Bogliani, et al. 1994. XXI Intl. Orn.
Congr.).
