Arid scrub, semi-desert.
Lowlands in Israel, sw Arabia, se Egypt, Senegambia, c,e Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia.
Non-breeding migrant in ne,se Kenya.
Call is identical to that of the sedentary C. tristigma, although non-breeding migrants in the territory of tristigma are silent (D. A. Turner, pers. comm.).

From British Isles and s Scandinavia e across nw,c Russia to sw Siberia, nw Mongolia and nw,nc China, and s to nw Africa, n Mediterranean region, Turkey, Near and Middle East, Pakistan and n India (probably Kashmir). Winters in tropical and southern Africa.
