A. c. carolinensis.  From w,n Alaska, n Yukon, nw,s Mackenzie, s Keewatin and ne Manitoba e across ec Canada to nc Labrador and Newfoundland, s locally to s Calif., sw U.S., and c U.S. from Kansas e to W. Virginia and Delaware.

Shallow lakes, marshes, coastal lagoons. 
Locally in se Libya (possibly),  Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, w Zambia, Namibia, Botswana, w Zimbabwe, Mozambique and S. Africa.  Ranges locally throughout e,s Africa north and west to se Niger, s Chad, Angola and se Zaire.

Cyprus; Turkey, Egypt, Near East, nc,ne Arabia, n Iran, n Afghanistan, n India in Kashmir, n China mostly n of lat. 40°N, and Japan.  N. America from Alaska incl. Pribilof and Aleutian is., n Yukon, nw,s Mackenzie, s Keewatin and ne Manitoba, n Ontario, s Quebec and
s Main s to s Calif., s Great Basin, s New Mexico, and from Oklahoma e through Ohio Valley to Virginia, locally to Gulf coast and Florida.

Widely domesticated; 
Domesticated breeds were derived from Eurasian populations of
