Brachyramphus marmoratus 
Pelagic and seacoasts; usually nests in coastal coniferous forest on high limbs of tall trees; occasionally on the ground.  
Most ground nests have been found in treeless areas in Alaska, but see note below. 
Known to breed only in Alaska on the Kenai Pen. and Barren Is., w Washington and locally in n coastal California s to Santa Cruz County.  Probably in other places from Alaska to California, but nests difficult to
find high up in tall trees.

Ford and Brown (1995. Wilson Bull. 107:178-179) cited previous
records of ground nests and described one in old-growth forest on n
Prince of Wales Island in se Alaska, ca. 13 km from saltwater.
