Catalogus Rerum Naturalium Rarissimarum (1793)PREFACE
Anton August Heinrich Lichtenstein Theol. et Philos.Dr., author of tlie Catalogue here reproduced literatim et
verbatim, is said to have been born in 1753 and to have died in 1816.At the time of his writing the present work be was Professor of Oriental Languages in tbe Gymnasium of Hamburg, and
Rector of tbe Johanneum in tbe same city, being also a member of tbe Gesellscbaft Naturforscbender Freunde zu Berlin.
Of Jewish descent and belonging to a family several of whom were addicted to scientific pursuits.Lichtenstein was from 1794 to 1796 assistant, and from 1796 to 1798 sole keeper of tbe public library in Hamburg; but, in tbe year last named, he was appointed to a professor sbip at Helmstädt.
Except the present, no ornitbological work is known to have been written by him; but be compiled two corresponding catalogues of Sbells, Insects, and otber specimens, and was tbe autbor of several zoological publications, besides translating into German Smellie's " Pbilosopby of Natural History."
Not with standing all the investigations which have been most kindly made by Herr C. G. Heise and Dr. Bolau of Hamburg, no further Information as to the collectiou catalogued in the following pages has been obtained, and even tbe name of its former owner cannot be discovered.
Tbe Hamburg newspapers of tbe year 1793 have, tbrough tbe good Offices of tbose gentlemen,been consulted, but without finding in tbem more on the subject tban announcements respecting the sale,which do not give so mucli information as the Catalogue itself does.
Only two copies of the present Catalogue are known to exist—one in the Library of the British Museum, frora which this reprint has been made, and the other in that of the University o£ Kiel.
